Our contribution Leveraging DNS and Machine Learning to protect Home Networks made it into the Top 10 of the international Telekom Challenge competetion.

DNS (Domain Name Service) is an essential Internet service and DNS also offers excellent opportunities as a security tool. We protect home networks by analyzing the DNS traffic using machine learning techniques. Our approach is to train a classifier to distinguish between clean domains names and malware domains and to go beyond static blacklists. We integrate the classifier into widely used DNS software (unbound), which can run on the CPE router. Subsequently, the traffic to domains that are classified as malicious is blocked.

Our TH Köln team members are students, research assistants and professors: Niklas Bärk, Jan Bollenbacher, Florian Heinrich, Heiko Knospe, Léon Lenzen, Marcel Möhn, David Morady, Beate Rhein.
